State Department of Education's Cellphone Policy in SC

Good afternoon,

The state has implemented a law restricting student access to personal electronic communication devices during the school day.  Marion County School District would like to inform you about a significant initiative from the South Carolina Department of Education called 'Free to Focus SC,' which launched on September 3, 2024.  This statewide policy aims to foster a distraction-free learning environment prohibiting using personal electronic devices during school hours, with full implementation starting on January 1, 2025.

What Does This Mean for Students?

To support focused and engaged learning, all personal electronic devices must be stored in lockers or backpacks throughout the school day. Devices should remain turned off and out of sight from arrival until the dismissal bell. This policy aligns with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by encouraging the development of essential college, career, and life skills.

MCSD Implementation Plan

Marion County School District will introduce a "soft start" to this policy beginning December 2, 2024.  Full enforcement will commence after the winter holidays on January 7, 2025.
