What is Teaching?

I was once told that if one does something they love, then one never works a day in their life. This is a very true statement for me.  Teaching cannot just be a job to pay the bills; it must be a passion.  A true teacher wakes up thinking how they are going to make a difference in a person’s life, and goes to sleep asking what more they could have done to reach their students.  Being in the classroom does not make one a teacher.  The planning of the school year, the adjustments made, integrity, and dedication make the teacher.  Teaching is not a regular nine to five job.  Teaching starts at about 5:30AM and usually ends around 11:00 PM.  This profession requires a great amount of time, dedication, and commitment, but the rewards make it worthwhile.  Initially, the rewards were hard to recognize, but after a few years, I was able to see the results of my hard work, which made such an impact in my life and motivated me to do more within my profession.  Everyone likes to see state report cards, district grades, and receive recognition, but those are not the big rewards.  The big rewards come from the students I work with every day.  Hearing a student tell me I made a difference in their life, thanking me for caring about them, or saying they know they can do something because I believed in them is invaluable.  Teaching is one of the most difficult, self-deprecating professions, but also, it gives the most fulfilling, rewarding paybacks that go beyond paychecks.  In my opinion, all of us, whether we have degrees or not, are teachers in some aspects of our lives.
