    JMS takes Top Awards at 2019 Sand Hills Region IV Science Fair 

     

    The 2019 Sand Hills Region IV Science Fair was held on April 3, 2019 at Francis Marion University in the Smith University Center Gymnasium.  Approximately 77 projects from 7 area schools were entered.  There were 75 projects entered in the Junior Division categories of Behavioral/Social Science, Botany, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, Gerontology/Medicine & Health, Mathematics, Microbiology/Zoology, Physics, and Team Projects. 23 students from Johnakin Middle School entered and exhibited their projects.

    9 students from Johnakin earned awards.  Alissa Crawford, eighth grade, was awarded a gold medal for her first place finish in Junior Division Behavioral/Social Science with a project titled “Music Score.” Eighth grader Kendall Elliott was awarded a gold medal for her first place finish in Junior Division Mathematics with a project titled “M & M Math – The Chaos Theory.” Eighth grader Tyler Heyward was awarded a gold medal for his first place finish in Junior Division Chemistry with a project titled “Electrolyte Nights.” Eighth grader Emily Britt was awarded a gold medal for her first place finish in Junior Division Microbiology for her project titled “Five Second Rule – Would You Take a Chance?” Eighth grader Hannah Coleman was awarded a gold medal for her first place finish in Junior Division Microbiology for her project titled “ Watch Your Mouth.”

    Jayla McGill, eighth grade, was awarded a silver medal for her second place finish in Junior Division Mathematics with a project titled “Chocolate Chips” Eighth grader Madison Smith was awarded a silver medal for her second place finish in Junior Division Mathematics with a project titled “Origami Angles.”

    Nigeria Hannah, eighth grade, was awarded a bronze medal for his third place finish in Junior Division Earth & Space Science with a project titled “Cooling It.”

    Bryan Barnhill, eighth grade, received an Honorable Mention in Junior Division Earth & Space Science with a project titled “Dams.”

      All students who entered projects received t-shirts and certificates provided by Francis Marion University and the American Chemical Society, the sponsors for the Sand Hills Region IV Science Fair. The teacher of these students is eighth grade Science teacher Mrs. Vickie Skipper.

  • 2018-19 JMS Science Fair a Show of Brilliant Minds           

    The Johnakin Middle School Science Fair was held on Wednesday, March 6 in the gymnasium.  Projects meeting all the requirements qualified for the Championship Division and were judged Wednesday afternoon.  An Open House was held at 7:30 pm so that students, parents, and the general public could view the projects.  Winners were announced at the Awards Ceremony immediately following the Open House.     

    Monetary awards, medals, and ribbons were given to the overall winners and to the first, second, and third place winners in the following categories:  Behavioral/Social Science, Botany, Chemistry, Earth/Space Science, Gerontology/Medicine & Health, Mathematics, Microbiology/Zoology, and Physics.  Ribbons were also awarded to Team Projects, Honorable Mentions, and all participants.      

      The first place overall winner was eighth grader Emily Britt with a Microbiology project titled “Five Second Rule – Would You Take a Chance?”  Alissa Crawford, eighth grade, was the second place overall winner with a Behavioral/Social Science project titled “Music Score.”  Eighth grader Hannah Coleman was the third place overall winner with a Zoology/Microbiology project titled “Watch Your Mouth.”

    Botany:  Jaliyah Kinney (first), Ashley Arzola (second)

    Chemistry:  Heaven Collins (first), Charlie Richardson (second), Samantha Love (third), and Roy Hayden (honorable mention).

    Earth/Space Science:  Bryan Barnhill (first), Tyliek Hannah (second).

    Gerontology/Medicine & Health:  Tyler Heyward (first), Mihika Patel (second), Noah Cribb (third), Dymond Warren (honorable mention).

    Mathematics:    Kendall Elliott (first), Madison Smith (second), Jayla McGill (third).

    Zoology/Microbiology:  Ann Marie Harrell (first), Janasia Stanley (second), Kaylee Beckstrand (third), Ronald Genwright (honorable mention).

    Physics:  Javori Wright (first), Hayley Kenney (second), Connor Shelley (third)

    Team Projects: None

                Winners have the opportunity to exhibit their projects at the Sand Hills South Carolina Region Science Fair at Francis Marion University on April 3, 2019.   The Science Fair was sponsored by the Johnakin Middle School Science Department which includes Mr. Colin Dzur, Mrs. Latonya Genwright, Ms. Tammy Hudson, Mrs. Vickie Skipper.
