Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to another great year at Marion Intermediate School! I am excited to begin the new school year as the principal and look forward to working with such an outstanding school community of parents and students. This year is going to be an exciting journey of learning and growing together as leaders.
The beginning of the school year is right around the corner and with it comes the excitement and opportunity to set new academic and personal goals, make new friends, and develop new habits, which will lead to positive academic, social, and emotional growth. Our motto for the 2018-2019 school year is “Star Leaders Today for a Better Tomorrow.” Children are creative in many ways and we want to establish an atmosphere where that creativity is used to unleash their leadership potential.
Marion Intermediate School will continue The Leader in Me initiative, a whole-school transformation process that teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. This is accomplished by teaching The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, principles Dr. Stephen Covey discovered that lead people to be most effective, and immersing our faculty, staff, and students in leadership roles. I encourage you to visit The Leader in Me website at www.leaderinme.org and familiarize yourself with this initiative.
We are committed to your child’s academic success and will achieve this through our data-driven, standards-based curriculum, engaging lessons, and rigorous classroom instruction. We believe in making MIS a warm, inviting, and nurturing home away from home so your child will feel comfortable and appreciated. But we cannot do this alone. You are your child’s personal cheerleader. Parent involvement is an important aspect in every child’s education and is the primary factor in a student’s success in school. We need your help, as parents, to meet and get to know your child’s teacher, visit the school and your child’s classroom, and offer suggestions to help MIS become the top performing school in South Carolina.
For all students, Open House will be Thursday, August 16, 2018, from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. During this time, parents can fill out forms, sign up for Parent Portal, order a yearbook, and meet your child’s teachers.
The first day of school is Monday, August 20, 2018. School starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. The building does not open until 7:00 a.m. each morning when teachers are on duty. Please do not drop your child off before 7:00 a.m. because there will be no adult supervision. If students are going to eat breakfast at school, they need to be here no later than 7:30 a.m. to give them time to eat and get to class by 7:45 a.m. when instruction begins. Students are tardy at 7:45. At this time, parents must come in the office to sign their child in.
As a reminder, the school uniform shirt colors are: 3rd grade – navy blue; 4th grade – maroon/burgundy; and 5th grade – hunter green. All shirts must be polo style, solid colors with no design, insignia, or other colors at all on them. As a suggestion, try The Children’s Place website to purchase uniform shirts and pants, if you choose. The prices appear to be affordable. The website is: https://www.childrensplace.com/us/c/boys-clothes-school-uniforms
I look forward to seeing many of you again and meeting the parents of our new students. I welcome your suggestions for improvement since you are important stakeholders in this school. Please feel free to call or email me to discuss any concerns, suggestions, or ideas to help make this the best school year yet! Also, visit our school’s website at www.marion.k12.sc.us/mis for additional information. It is truly going to be an awesome year at MIS!
And as always, students at MIS are star leaders today for a better tomorrow!
